Spatial Data Management Framework

The problem

MMG creates a significant amount of data that has a spatial component. Much of this data is inherently valuable, either in isolation or when combined with other (spatial and non-spatial) data sets.

However, the management of spatial and spatially related information in MMG was highly fragmented. The inability to quickly and easily discover and access documents and information leads to a range of business issues. These include substantial additional costs caused by errors or oversights, inefficient process execution, and decision-making based on inaccurate or incomplete information due to the inability to share the information resources that are available to MMG.

This situation informed the need to develop a cohesive spatial data management framework and an implementation plan for the framework.

Mercury’s contribution

Mercury was the spatial subject matter expert engaged by Velrada to capture the user requirements at the MMG Melbourne headquarters as well as on-site at MMG’s operations in Laos.

Upon sign-off of the user requirements, our team facilitated a request for information (RFI) process to identify suitable solutions. We issued the RFI to five GIS vendors, analysed the responses and provided a recommendation to MMG. Key criteria for the RFI assessment were satisfaction of user requirements and technological fit, especially regarding integration with other business systems. We then developed a conceptual architecture and related data and application governance structures.
